Use case
Dictation for RSI and wrist pain
SayWrite replaces most typing with speech: hold Fn, talk, and text appears in any app, with commands for new lines and corrections.
- In Mail · Re: Q3 numbers, you say: “so basically the numbers look good but uh we're still waiting on legal so let's not announce until monday”. SayWrite types: “The numbers look good, but we're still waiting on legal. Let's hold the announcement until Monday.”
- In Notes · Chapter 4, you say: “the rain had stopped by the time she reached the station new paragraph nobody was waiting”. SayWrite types: “The rain had stopped by the time she reached the station. Nobody was waiting.”
Not medical advice. SayWrite is a writing tool, not a treatment or a medical device. If you have symptoms or a diagnosis, talk to a qualified clinician about what's right for you.
Why voice
Fewer keystrokes
The NHS lists typing among the repeated movements that can cause the pain it calls repetitive strain injury, and suggests talking to your employer about changing how you work. Dictation is one way to change it: most writing (email, chat, documents, notes) can be spoken instead of typed.
SayWrite covers the writing. It doesn't move the pointer or click buttons. For full hands-free control of your Mac, look at Apple's built-in Voice Control.
How it helps
Built to keep your hands still
- Tap, don't hold. Tap fn once to start and again to stop, or switch the trigger to the Control-Option-D shortcut in Settings. You never have to keep a key held down.
- Spoken commands: “new line”, “new paragraph” and “scratch that” (which removes the last dictation).
- Voice snippets: say “my address” or “sign-off” and the full text is typed for you.
- Fix by voice: select text and say “make this more concise” or “fix the grammar”, and the selection is replaced.
- Edit Last Dictation fixes a result with one click instead of retyping it.
- Paste Again and Undo Last Dictation from the Dock menu or menu bar.
Privacy
Private enough for work
If you dictate all day, you dictate everything: client emails, HR notes, code. SayWrite keeps audio and text on your Mac and works offline. How SayWrite handles your data.
Setup
Setup
Download SayWrite, allow Microphone and Accessibility, and download the speech model. A decent headset microphone helps in noisy rooms. Then start with one kind of writing, such as email, and let it grow from there.
Frequently asked questions
Can SayWrite control my whole Mac by voice?
No. SayWrite is for writing: it types what you say into any app. To click, scroll and navigate by voice, use Apple's built-in Voice Control, which is designed for full hands-free control.
Will dictation fix my RSI?
We can't promise that, and SayWrite isn't a medical product. It can reduce how much you type. For pain or symptoms, see a doctor, physiotherapist or occupational therapist.
Do I have to hold the Fn key?
No. Tap Fn once to start and again to stop, or use the Control-Option-D shortcut instead of Fn.
