What is the best dictation app for Mac?

It depends on one question first: are you comfortable sending your voice to a cloud service? If yes, Wispr Flow is the best-known option and works across Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android. If no, the strongest Mac options run speech recognition on your Mac: SayWrite, Superwhisper's free plan, VoiceInk, MacWhisper and Apple's built-in Dictation. Superwhisper: best for custom modes

Superwhisper's free plan uses local Whisper models, and its documentation says nothing you dictate leaves your device. Pro adds cloud voice models, Parakeet, AI modes and bring-your-own API keys. It supports more than 100 languages on Mac, Windows, iOS and Android.

MacWhisper: best for recordings

MacWhisper transcribes audio and video files, meetings and YouTube videos locally, with speaker recognition, and it includes system-wide dictation. Pro is a one-time €64 and can connect to cloud AI providers or local models. If you mostly transcribe files, start here; SayWrite can transcribe files too.

VoiceInk: best if you want open source

VoiceInk processes transcription locally and publishes its code on GitHub under the GPL-3.0 license. Licenses are one-time: $25 for one Mac, up to $49 for three. It needs Apple silicon and macOS 14.4 or later.

Apple Dictation: best free built-in option

What's the best free dictation software for Mac?

Apple Dictation is free forever and already installed. SayWrite is free during early access with no word limit. Superwhisper and MacWhisper have free versions, and Wispr Flow's free tier limits desktop dictation to 2,000 words a week.

What about Dragon?

Nuance ended sales and updates of Dragon Professional Individual for Mac on October 22, 2018. It isn't a maintained option for current macOS.
